When it comes to brushing your kid’s teeth, there are few things to know that can help make sure your child has a bright healthy smile for a lifetime.

Clean teeth start even before they come in. You should wipe your baby’s gums with a clean towel or piece of gauze after each feeding. When your child is still a baby or toddler, you will need to brush their teeth for them. Babies need just a tiny smear of toothpaste, and toddlers can use a pea-sized dollop.  Until your child learns not to swallow the toothpaste, you may want to use toothpaste without fluoride, but ask our dentist, Dr. Carlos Rojas when you should switch to fluoridated toothpaste.

Teach your child to brush for two minutes at a time. Try making a game of it, using music or a rhyme to make it fun. You can also let your child pick out their own toothbrush or toothpaste so that they feel more involved in the process. One of the best things you can do to instill good brushing habits in your child is to model good behavior. If they see you eating a balanced diet, and brushing your teeth, they will follow your lead.

Don’t forget, regular visits to the dentists for cleanings and checkups are key to keeping your child’s mouth healthy.
